My wife is Spanish and we have owned properties in the Murcia region for 25 years. It was only during the late 90's that Spanish property prices rose significantly. Oversupply and a strong Euro initially caused prices to stabilise but the collapse of the UK mortgage market led to a general decline in demand and price errosion which closely follows the situation in the UK
This paints a gloomy picture but as I type this note in the UK with the thermometer at 16 degs C in pouring rain the positive aspects of becoming an expat and moving to Spain are still relevant.
Aside from the sunshine Pensioners on a modest income can still enjoy a better quality of life in Spain and their money will stretch further compared with the UK.
We still have our main home in Northampton due to family and dogs but having been to Murcia and Jerez this year we still find that the general cost of living is around 30% less than the UK and the friendliness of the local people makes Spain an ideal retirement destination
A little effort to learn the language opens up opportunities for healthy eating and membership of the local Pensionistas clubs which offer meals and low cost trips to other areas of Spain.
